Living Together

When making the decision to live together, the legal position of the relationship should be understood at the outset.

Very often this is the last thing on the mind of two people who love each other and wish to share their lives together.

The prospect of a breakdown of that relationship is perhaps not considered either out of a refusal to believe that it could happen or out of a sense of loyalty to the partner.

Nonetheless, it is in the interest of the parties to understand what might happen should the relationship break down.

As the law presently stands, the protection that is given to married couples is not given to couples living together outside the bond of marriage. For this reason, many injustices befall those people who do not protect themselves in advance.

It is always best to protect against a possibility even though it is hoped that that advice will never have to be acted upon.
